Removing a fish tank is a difficult task. You have to think
about re-housing your fish and you also have to dismantle all of the fish tank
components. However, it is not an impossible task to do. If you can prepare
your fish tank for removal, you can most certainly unpack it once it arrives at
the new location.
The first thing you need to do is set up the fish tank again. This means that you set up the pumps, heaters, thermometers and any other electronic gadgets. Be sure to follow the instruction manual in order to avoid making mistakes. If your tank is not completely empty i.e. you decided to leave a little water in it, top it up to the top using more water. If you are using tap water, always make sure that you add chemicals to the water which are going to remove the chlorine, since chlorine is very dangerous to aquatic life. It is also highly recommended that you add some biological bacteria that are also crucial to aquatic life. If you have left some water in the tank before you removed it, chances are that some aerobic bacteria will still be preserved which are going to be promoted by further adding some more.
Add all of the ornaments and position them according to your taste. If you are adding brand new ornaments, do not forget to give them a wash before you put them in the tank to wash off any oils from the paint. At this stage, it is always recommended that you add a few living plants to the tank, since they will further improve the environment in the tank. Allow the tank to run for a little while before adding the fish. This is to regulate the conditions and to allow the water to reach optimum temperature.

Fish need to be exposed to their new environment gently and slowly, as you did when you first purchased them from the store. If you have previously kept them at a pet store, chances are that they may have started adapting to the water at the pet store, which can vary chemically. Slowly open the bag and place it in the fish tank and allow the fish to swim out of the bag and into the tank. Mixing the pet store water with your own is a good idea.
If your fish were kept in a bucket or plastic bag whilst the tank was being removed, you may think that you can just chuck them in because they have been in the same water all along – wrong! You need to be just as careful when transferring your fish from a bag or bucket containing the original tank water as you would do with new fish. Use the same method as above and allow your fish to get used to their new environment. Avoid adding any food to the tank since your fish will still be too stressed to eat anything.
Once a few hours have passed, check to make sure that everything is okay. Unfortunately, smaller fish can die during the removal process due to the stress, so be sure to remove any dead fish. However, should you follow the above instructions carefully, this occurrence should be very rare. Food can be added to the tank, since your fish should now be stress free and comfortable in their environment.
